5 Tips for Better Printed Materials

High-quality printing begins long before the first sheets go through the press. Making the right choices during the design and preparation process has a major impact on the final result.

From the type of paper to the finish: every detail contributes to the look, user experience, and quality of your printed materials. With these five tips, you can get more out of your next brochure, catalog, magazine, or other print project.

1. Choose your paper type carefully

Paper is much more than just the medium for your design. It plays a major role in determining how printed material is perceived.

Matte paper creates a calm, stylish look, while glossy paper makes colors stand out more. The thickness of the paper also plays an important role. A higher grammage feels sturdier and often gives a more luxurious impression.

In addition, each type of paper has its own character. Uncoated paper feels natural and warm to the touch, while coated paper produces sharper images and more intense colors.

The choice of paper should therefore always be consistent with the message you want to convey.

2. Think about the binding method

The binding method determines not only how a publication looks, but also how practical it is to use.

There are several options, each with its own advantages:

  • Enjoy: ideal for magazines, brochures, and program booklets with a limited number of pages.
  • PUR binding: ensures a smooth spine and a sturdy finish; suitable for thicker publications.
  • Wire-O binding: the pages can be turned 360° and lie perfectly flat when open. Ideal for calendars, planners, sample books, manuals, and workbooks.
  • Swiss binding: the spine remains visible, giving the book a modern and eye-catching look.

By considering how the printed material will be used in advance, you can choose a binding method that is the right choice both functionally and visually.

3. Use high-quality images

Even the most beautiful design loses its impact when the image quality is poor.

Images that look good on a screen aren’t always suitable for print. A sufficiently high resolution is essential for a sharp result. Low resolution can lead to blurry or grainy images, which immediately detracts from the professional look.

That’s why you should always choose high-quality photos, logos, and illustrations that are suitable for print production. This ensures that colors, details, and contrasts are shown to their best advantage.

4. Don’t forget the technical details

A good design deserves proper technical preparation.

Factors such as bleed, safety margins, and the correct file settings ensure that the printed material is ultimately produced exactly as intended.

When images or solid color areas extend to the edge, bleed is necessary to avoid white trim marks. Important text and logos, on the other hand, should be placed far enough away from the trim line.

Submitting a correct print file also helps prevent surprises during production and contributes to a smooth printing process from start to finish.

5. Match the finish to the design

The finishing touches are often the last step, but they make a world of difference.

A matte or glossy laminate protects the printed material while enhancing its appearance. Spot varnish can further accentuate certain elements, while foil stamping adds a touch of luxury.

The right finish not only catches the eye but also enhances the experience of the printed material. By tailoring this choice to the design, you create a whole that makes an impression both visually and to the touch.
